searching for a studio in vancouver

I have been searching for a studio space in Vancouver so I can re-chain myself to the sewing machine and get working on the DNS collection for [FAT].

Thanks to a tip from my friend Britt I discovered this magical space called the purple thistle.. It is an free, co-operative run, open studio space that is devoted to fostering the creativity of its members.

With silk screening supplies, dark rooms, zine library, crazy-hydrolics-animation machines, computers, space and a walking foot sewing machine this studio is an amazing resource and really open to anyone with the right attitude.

Perfect. Exactly what I'm looking for. Before I begin jumping for joy, I'll need to get the machine working.... But with the sewing super-powers of DNS behind me I have no worries.

The serendipity continued when I started chatting to some of the members of the collective, and we realized that as we stood outside this crazy little space on an abandoned industrial road in east van, that we had all attended the same 150 person high school on parliament in toronto. Oh Inglenook. For those who know the nook, you know.

Tofu Wrap

Our rival gang may think bike style is for losers, but I think you should pause the video at 0:52 and 2:39 to take a look at their ring leader Tofu and his SKIN TIGHT MANSY.

The video was made by good friend Chip, and celebrates what was the World Bike Messenger Championships 2008.

The New President Likes Bikes!

Obama on A Bike.

I hope to see our own leaders riding bikes this year! I challenge them to play Booze Relay with us! The Coalition Government vs. The Deadly Nightshades.... who will win!?!?! It doesn't matter, as long as you recycle your beer cans and vodka bottles and dance like a fiend when the ride is over.

My city Councilor Adam Vaughn rides one. I actually see him ridding around too, which I appreciate in a councilor.

(Blog post idea kinda stolen form Riding Pretty Blog. She's kinda really awesome.)

DNS on Tour in Ottawa for Velo Vogue!!!

The DNS invaded Ottawa for a little bike fashion show in Westboro this weekend. Fixie fashion and fantastically functional bike messenger bags, Simples shoes and badass bicycles turned Tall Tree Cycle Shop into a mecca for the chic cyclists of O-town!

Special Bonus Pinup!

Pinups of the Week - Big Red, Fierce Bambi and "Chainsaw" Mzungu

Okay I know I'm gonna get flack for posting more than one pinup of the week that don't pertain to love, flowers and bicycles, but there were just too many awesome pics from this weekend that I had to post them all. But to justify them, we were in Ottawa on tour, promoting our Fall '09 collection at Velo Vogue, which I will write another blog about later.

Ten Best Green Jobs for the Next Decade

"Massive investments in clean energy promise to keep farmers, urban planners, and green-tech entrepreneurs in business for the next decade. This guide to sustainability focused career paths will help solar-charge your work life."
I noticed that they didn't include Smoking-Hot Female Sustainable Fashion Bike Gang, but maybe they did their research and concluded we have the market cornered on that one.

Step Two... DNS in Ottawa this weekend!!!

Step One... Matching jackets.
Step Three... Take over the world.

The DNS will be in Ottawa this weekend for a bike themed fashion show called Velo Vogue at Ottawa's premiere bicycle shop, Tall Tree Cycles The show will be featuring a preview of our Fall '09 collection and some of our very favorite pieces from it!!! There will also be clothing by Victoria based Smoking Lily and from the Workshop in Ottawa, who are doing something really similar to what I'm working on at 69 Vintage.

Please come say hi if you're in the Ottawa area!!!

Pale Blue Dot

I was once told that the opposite of war was not peace, but creation. As a designer, I take that to heart. Our hearts go out to ALL families that are affected by the tragedies going on in the Gaza Strip. My personal hope is that our world leaders will find the wisdom and strength to end hatred and build a world based on mutual respect and love of life on this pale blue dot.

Kindred Spirit...

I totally have a crush on Unicycle Creative, a sustainable marketing firm out of Vancouver B.C.
Sustainable, well designed, bike-themed, artsy and sassy? Be still my beating heart!!!

Linda Varekamp - Bike Quilter Extrordinaire

Linda Varekamp is my new hero. Not just because she is the awesome new knitting teacher where I work at 69 Vintage, but because she makes patchwork quilts of bicycles. QUILTS OF FUCKING BICYCLES!!! Did you ever see anything as magnificent in your entire life??? No. You never fucking have and you never will. That is why Linda is amazing. She can also crochet small animals and I defy you to find me anything cuter than crocheted weiner dog. Anyways, her bike quilt is on display this week at Metro Hall. You can go vote for her if you are near there. There will be a reception where they announce the winners on Thursday night, check it out here.

She will be teaching a class on how to knit a cell phone cozy at 69 Vintage Buy the Pound (1234 Bloor W) on January 29th, and a crocheted cupcake class the Thursday after that!!! Please join the facebook group here if you'd like to sign up!!!

FLY MY CHILDREAN

Photobucket

http://www.valorandvellum.com/

so I know that christmas is over,

but if you are still wondering what the perfect gift for me is, then it's your lucky day! I just discovered this fantastical shoes designer from Chili, who makes these banging hot slouchy boots out of fused layers of plastic bags! She's named them the Dakka boot and I think they are a great example of how eco-conscious design actually ups the esthetic anty.

NEW NIGHTSHADE!!!

There comes a time in every girl's life when she gets inducted into an all girl fashion bike gang... oh wait. Not really- not many people will ever be quite awesome enough to be inducted into the Deadly Nightshades. Stop asking.

Kirsten White, however, meets all Nightshade's standards, being:
  • Rides a rad custom low rider bike
  • Has awesome personality.
  • Is an amazingly caring friend
  • Is a talented photographer
  • Is a fucking BABE
  • Can hold her own in a bar fight
  • Wants to save the world
So how does a Nightshade get inducted? This time it was a SLUMBER PARTY!!! YEAH!!!
We ran out of the vintage shinny fabric, so while we wait for the new hemp/silk to come in, we baked her a cake.
She loved it and said yes!
And then we silk-screened some value village tees!!
Mzungu is a master of silkscreen.
GLORIOUS. Welcome Kirsten. We love you. <3

Then we all put on nighties, had a pillow fight and fed each other cake. I'll post those photos latter.

p.s. Stay tuned for new tattoos and bathing suits.

We popped a big bottle of Bambino on the dance floor.
Evan Biddell joined in on the merriment.

The Amazing Fritz Helder and the Phantom's counted us down. "Making a Scene" is a Nightshades theme song.
Big Red with the ever so lovely event organizer Jen Foster.

Big Red with boss Philip Sparks, who graciously hosted a private private party in his loft studio.

Namtron is fraternizing with the enemy.

Big Red with friend's Kai and Lionel.

We partied inside a fishbowl.

Happy 2009! May it be filled with friends, bikes, sustainable fashion and enforcing awesome. xoxo
